Dear friends of design, we present to you our latest project in Tenerife, Spain – a transformation of an existing garage into a modern apartment with an area of 90 square meters, where absolutely nothing is missing! Step by step we will guide you through the process, so that you can transform your home or garage into a comfortable living space. FIRST STEP: MEASURING AND CREATING AN APPROPRIATE STRATEGY
Take the dimensions of the room, make plenty of pictures, examine the construction (here you will need the assistance of an engineer-constructor) and consider the possibilities of transforming the space. The biggest challenge for us (in this case), was to bring sunlight into the room. To achieve this, we have made a structural opening in the ceiling above the dining area; we have added an access ladder and glazed the space around it. And of course, we have set up the separate rooms. Now is the time to think about how to bring nature into your home.
SECOND STEP: INSPIRATION
The style is determined by the location of the dwelling. In our case, we were inspired by the local Moorish style, strongly influenced by the proximity of Africa and Morocco. We’ve chosen ethno accents, earth colors and Mediterranean coziness.
STEP THREE: SELECTING GREENERY
This part of the transformation was one of the most pleasant tasks . The abundance of exotic plants (from insect eaters to diverse cactuses) has made the choice difficult, but it has also helped us to make the dwelling much cozier and to bring nature into it. Improvise with flowers and plants that are appropriate for our climate and you will not go wrong!
STEP FOUR: WORK PROCESS
The process of transforming the garage into a self-contained and functional dwelling was not an easy task but with the help of a team of local workers, it took us less than 5 weeks. Drilling holes in the ceiling and walls, building a terraced garden, placing new window joinery and fitting the new metal ladder were major challenges!
STEP FIVE: CHOOSING THE DETAILS
It’s time to select the details. The chairs and dining table are selected on the spot and carry the spirit of the island. Choose such details that reflect the true nature and traditions of the city where your home is located!
