To transform your yard into an attractive corner for gatherings and reflections, extravagant architectural solutions are not needed. If you don’t know what a perlog or belvedere means, you’ll be amazed at how these strange words can be a magnet for both you and your friends to spend more time in the garden.
Perhaps we have all been saddened by the time spent outside, and perhaps this will become a strong motive for many of us to channel the newly collected energy into creativity in the yard. Why not then create the coolness so sought after in the summer? Especially if you keep in mind that this will be a point of attraction for long and shared summer afternoons and evenings in pleasant company.
Belvedere
No more evasion! The belvedere is not a mysterious warrior or a tool of labor, it is an independent structure in garden spaces, which is characterized as a place to relax and observe a beautiful view. In different regions, the belvedere is called by different names and is also known as a kyosk, gazebo, gazebo, tea house or summer house.
Usually, the belvedere has a roof to protect from the sun and has “open” walls so that it is possible to contemplate the space around. Built-in seats are a characteristic element and predispose to outdoor gatherings, but if you want to keep the pages open, you can also bet on movable furniture.
Perhaps the belvedere may seem completely superfluous to you as a building, but in the presence of a large and spacious yard, it can become the icing on the cake and be a wonderful and complementary space in your home, allowing you to break away from the usual “hanging” in the dining room.
Here are some design tips from us before you embark on the creation of the structure:
- Size and proportions – it is important to consider well what the most optimal size of your belvedere should be in relation to the yard space. And then choose a suitable shape that fits the location so that it doesn’t look too small or out of place.
- Materials – usually wooden or metal material is used for its construction, and it would be best to match it to the style of your cottage so that it complements it harmoniously.
- Location – the belvedere is a suitable building for an “escape”, i.e. you can make it at a considerable distance from your home, or include it in the overall architectural view of the villa, so that it is a bonus space to it.
Veranda
If you’d rather stay closer to home, why not consider setting up a porch? The porch in front overlooks the world and is an excellent place to start your day with a cup of coffee and reading, or sip a cocktail at sunset. A veranda overlooking the backyard is ideal for parties and barbecues.
Whichever of the two choices is more suitable for your case, you will definitely agree that the porch is a continuation of the already existing building – your home. Then you should definitely use the same type of materials for its separation and not run too far from the general style. And whether you add a canopy, a beautiful carving or a semi-closed thread is a matter of taste and functionality that you are looking for.
If it is facing ahead, remember that the porch will be the first impression of home. Therefore, our advice would be to consider in detail its design and furnishings. Each element will also be relevant in the decoration. For example, beautiful Acapulco chairs are a good choice, and with a few cushions you can combine the complementary colors in the atmosphere. Hanging vegetation will enliven the space and to some extent can block unwanted views from the outside. And smaller deco details add value and character to the space.
If the house plan allows you to build a porch overlooking the backyard, then this is certainly your new party spot! In this case, you may be more experimental and trust the needs for coziness and functionality.
Undoubtedly, you can consider a built-in barbecue with a lid and a mini kitchen countertop to be at your disposal once you get into the culinary world. An almost obligatory addition to it is an out-of-the-box dining room if you want to take the mood outside. You may want to consider a suitable table or high bar around which to enjoy the time spent together with delicious food.
Pergola
A pergola is also a garden element and a relatively simple structure or arch with a frame covered with climbing or creeping plants. It consists only of side columns and crossbars and, unlike the belvedere, has no walls or roof. It can be free-standing, attached to the cottage as an annex, or even cover an alley. And if you are wondering how to create a pleasant shade on your future porch – the perloga will make it cozy and bright.
There are no two opinions that it is worth considering whether your garden is suitable for creating the perlog and how it will best fit into the overall ensemble of the cottage and the space around it. The pergola should be consistent with the style of the building and the proportions of the areas in the yard. It helps to form the structure of the garden, changes the ratio between covered and open spaces and puts an additional emphasis on the organization of the terrain.
Of course, again, it’s good not to forget: before you embark on this project:
- Materials – they can be quite diverse – from willow twigs, creating a casual and most natural atmosphere, to wood, metal or glass, used in modern interpretations.
- Location – it is important to take into account where the perlog will be located; If there will be a back of creeping plants, then consider where the face is looking – east or west exposure? Or it will be like a beautiful tunnel, complementing the landscape of the yard.
Whatever decision you make to develop your green areas around the villa will add value and give significant character to the exterior of your home. Building a complementary structure will remind you to break away from domestic everyday life and spend more time in nature, surrounded by beautiful views, not anywhere else, but in your home.
