Minimalism and cubic shapes: a modern interpretation of a Mediterranean villa

You remember that since May we have been on the Mediterranean wave and we like to immerse ourselves in the spirit of the coastal villas. Vacation August logically brings us back to the topic, but this time we will look at its contemporary interpretation and how Mediterranean architecture is influenced by modernism.

If in our May blog post we had focused on the distinctive and lavish elements typical of this architectural style, as well as on the open spaces – now we want to pay attention to their absolute contrast, which is an integral part of the currents that influenced the Mediterranean in the architectural aspect of modern times.

Straight corners and simple shapes

Perhaps a little surprising that an element borrowed from modernism and strongly present in the style of south coast houses is the simplified general view. At the beginning of the 20th century, leading modernists in architecture, such as Le Corbusier, for example, strongly adhered to simpler forms and minimizing decoration. This reinforces the white facades with thick walls, but with a much simpler design and the exclusion of complex fragments and decorations.

Small abstract windows and column lifting

As a total contrast to the large windows connecting the premises with the external environment, small windows with non-standard shapes are very popular here. On the one hand, they provide this clean vision of the façade, but on the other hand, they aim to allow less sun into the home and keep it as a cool and “shady” place. The abstract design gives the feeling of a contemporary reading.

The typical column lifting, again recognized as Le Corbusier’s handwriting, is recognized as appropriate in the construction of Mediterranean villas, in part because of the natural features of the places where they are usually created. This contributes to the easy terrace of the house, which is so characteristic of this region.

But in the most up-to-date interpretations of Mediterranean construction, you will notice the presence of the best of both “models”. The solution to limit the scorching sun and yet the separation of larger panoramic windows is most often blinds made of dense and natural material such as wood. The lifting of columns is also a preferred element in the design, which, in addition to pleasantly corresponding with right angles and cubic shapes, allows to form this fusion of inside and out.

Typical of southern latitudes is the basin and it is often an integral part of the landscape. We looked at several types of pools in our last article in our edna.bg column, which are undoubtedly a suitable addition to the overall Mediterranean villa landscape. Stay tuned for our next topic, which will give guidance in choosing features to implement in your future pool. [:]

Sense of space: architecture as a projection of a moving body

In the last few years, the focus of architecture and design at a professional level has been on performative and immersive arts as a medium through which to explore the behavior of the body in space in a contemporary and alternative way. Back in 2017, the Architectural Biennale in Chicago marked the tendentious attraction of art performers to put the moving body in their concepts, drawing attention to its relationship with the environment and design – both of the premises and of the buildings themselves.

This, in turn, confirmed in the next two years that through art we pose questions that are of keenly interest to architects and showed that the importance of how we inhabit spaces is changing dynamically in the modern world.

Contemporary Dance and Architecture – Design Process and Ease of Feeling

What do dance and architecture have in common? Viewed entirely as an art form, architecture approaches contemporary dance not only in the aesthetics of the finished creation, but also in the nature of creation. The design of both processes has a serious dependence on the movement of the body in space. Since movement initially requires the presence of space, then the purely physical comprehension of how space and movement are perceived by the body of the creator is the leading motive for both.

The culmination of symbiosis – site-specific projects uniting the two arts into one

From bridges and buildings to cultural monuments to abandoned spaces, contemporary choreographers completely transform conventional understandings of performance. When a dance piece is created in interaction with a specific space, then the place itself, being part of the performance, acquires the significance of a participant in the piece as much as the body of the artist. Originating in the 60s and 70s of the 20th century, site-specific dance performances are becoming more and more avant-garde and involve the viewer in an experiment of studying a specific space through the presence of the body in it.

Inhabited or abandoned, an architectural space continues to live its life, and completely beyond the idea of a human refuge built of concrete, reinforcement and glass packages. Dance has the power to embody a new, deeper creative meaning of the place, emphasizing the qualities of design and architectural features.

The charm of the Mediterranean architectural style

Since the beginning of May, we have been in a series of long weekends. With the first warm and green days, everyone is looking for an opportunity to relax in a pleasant and cozy place. What could be better than a long holiday at the villa? And probably, most of us are already starting to “tighten” the villas for the summer season. And if you are a lover of luxurious and sophisticated style, then surely you like Mediterranean architecture and dream of achieving its charm in your home. And have you ever wondered what makes it so distinctive and attractive?

In addition to always reminding us of Mediterranean beaches and salty breezes, it is characteristic that it is a mixture of several geographical regions – it has borrowings from both the Spanish and Italian styles. Of course, for us, the white cement facades mostly remind us of our closer Greece, but they also carry this architectural spirit. They are considered, broadly speaking, Mediterranean, since they all share some typical elements.

Such are the many decorative motifs, heavy doors, light façade and tiles, fragments of wrought iron. Let’s not miss the romantic arch, which can be seen from the very entrance gate of the yard, and even on a sculpted window. And in contrast to the façade in neutral tones is the ceramic red roof, which turns the house into a home.

The modern interpretation of Mediterranean architecture has an emphasis on a casual lifestyle and open spaces. This also determines the choice of furniture with an extremely comfortable design, suitable for relaxation.

It is almost mandatory to have at least one floor designed with spacious openings. If it is impossible to have a large terrace, then a gazebo or a summer kitchen can make use of the stay outside in a cozy corner.

Of course, each owner of such a residence shows his personal reading of convenience and style. Some will bet on exquisite taste with heavy and antique furniture, rich textures and patterns reminiscent of a villa in Tuscany. Others will choose the familiar comfort of a soft sofa, but in light and neutral shades.
