4 basic questions when choosing a sofa

There are connections where you just want to sit comfortably. Such is the one that you establish with one of the most important and central furniture in our lives – the sofa. When buying a home or moving to a new place, many of you find it difficult to take a step towards long-term commitment and buying this otherwise valuable item. Combined with the functionality and style you need in your daily life, choosing the right sofa can be challenging. Among the plethora of virtual offerings you’re constantly following, how can you be sure you’re making the right decision for your space?

What is the orientation of the space for which you choose a sofa?

Before, there was not much thought about the matter – the sofa is opposite the TV. Point. For modern society, the TV is increasingly absent from the interior. Corners are separated, and each of them has its own spirit and purpose.

Of course, first of all, the needs of the family should be outlined – whether you all gather together for board games or everyone has their own area for their own activities, whether you often invite guests or prefer to relax only in the company of your loved one. This makes it very easy to plan the spaces.

What is the theme of the interior?

If we take modern, contemporary, traditional and casual as the main themes, then it is good to orient yourself in which direction your choice of interior leans. A lot depends on this factor not only what fabrics and primary colors you will choose, but also what the style of the sofa itself will be.

You may prefer a minimalist flat design with voluminous cushions for a stylish interior. In this case, you can play with fabrics that bring a sense of a more sophisticated environment and accentuate removable pillows with plush or long hair.

/photo: ATG design/

For a more casual and casual style, a sofa with large and soft back backrests is suitable for you to sink comfortably. Then it is good to stick to light colors and fabrics with a higher cotton content.

If you are looking for a more independent experience – you can opt for a sofa of separate parts, so that everyone sitting enjoys personal freedom on the couch. Large soft stools are appropriately complemented in style.

Are there any features of the place that you must comply with?

It is good to be guided from the room, determining its furniture. In this case, if there are niches or other characteristic features of the place, it is good to comply with them at the very beginning. This way you can optimize the space as much as possible and take advantage of the advantages that are taking shape.

Will he pass the convenience test?

It is imperative to try out the sofa before trusting it with the comfort of space for the next few years. Well, our friends from Design Lab. have organized a clever laboratory principle of work in the design of your future interior and offer the opportunity, in addition to looking at rich catalogs, to vote with your senses this upcoming investment.

Often the organization of the entire space revolves around the armchair in the living room, so we advise you, after answering the above questions, be sure to measure several times. You wouldn’t want to fail the moment when delivery is at the door and it turns out that your new sofa cannot pass through the checkout or meet a challenge at the turn in the hallway.

In this long process of planning and calculations, an interior designer is a strong trump card on your side to save you a hasty choice. We are available for complete solutions for your new home and will be happy to assist you in determining the overall style in which the sofa plays a major role. [:]

Sense of space: architecture as a projection of a moving body

In the last few years, the focus of architecture and design at a professional level has been on performative and immersive arts as a medium through which to explore the behavior of the body in space in a contemporary and alternative way. Back in 2017, the Architectural Biennale in Chicago marked the tendentious attraction of art performers to put the moving body in their concepts, drawing attention to its relationship with the environment and design – both of the premises and of the buildings themselves.

This, in turn, confirmed in the next two years that through art we pose questions that are of keenly interest to architects and showed that the importance of how we inhabit spaces is changing dynamically in the modern world.

Contemporary Dance and Architecture – Design Process and Ease of Feeling

What do dance and architecture have in common? Viewed entirely as an art form, architecture approaches contemporary dance not only in the aesthetics of the finished creation, but also in the nature of creation. The design of both processes has a serious dependence on the movement of the body in space. Since movement initially requires the presence of space, then the purely physical comprehension of how space and movement are perceived by the body of the creator is the leading motive for both.

The culmination of symbiosis – site-specific projects uniting the two arts into one

From bridges and buildings to cultural monuments to abandoned spaces, contemporary choreographers completely transform conventional understandings of performance. When a dance piece is created in interaction with a specific space, then the place itself, being part of the performance, acquires the significance of a participant in the piece as much as the body of the artist. Originating in the 60s and 70s of the 20th century, site-specific dance performances are becoming more and more avant-garde and involve the viewer in an experiment of studying a specific space through the presence of the body in it.

Inhabited or abandoned, an architectural space continues to live its life, and completely beyond the idea of a human refuge built of concrete, reinforcement and glass packages. Dance has the power to embody a new, deeper creative meaning of the place, emphasizing the qualities of design and architectural features.

The charm of the Mediterranean architectural style

Since the beginning of May, we have been in a series of long weekends. With the first warm and green days, everyone is looking for an opportunity to relax in a pleasant and cozy place. What could be better than a long holiday at the villa? And probably, most of us are already starting to “tighten” the villas for the summer season. And if you are a lover of luxurious and sophisticated style, then surely you like Mediterranean architecture and dream of achieving its charm in your home. And have you ever wondered what makes it so distinctive and attractive?

Photo source: www.homedit.com

In addition to always reminding us of Mediterranean beaches and salty breezes, it is characteristic that it is a mixture of several geographical regions – it has borrowings from both the Spanish and Italian styles. Of course, for us, the white cement facades mostly remind us of our closer Greece, but they also carry this architectural spirit. They are considered, broadly speaking, Mediterranean, since they all share some typical elements.

Photo source: www.homedit.com

Such are the many decorative motifs, heavy doors, light façade and tiles, fragments of wrought iron. Let’s not miss the romantic arch, which can be seen from the very entrance gate of the yard, and even on a sculpted window. And in contrast to the façade in neutral tones is the ceramic red roof, which turns the house into a home.

Photo source: www.homedit.com

The modern interpretation of Mediterranean architecture has an emphasis on a casual lifestyle and open spaces. This also determines the choice of furniture with an extremely comfortable design, suitable for relaxation.

Photo source: www.freshome.com

It is almost mandatory to have at least one floor designed with spacious openings. If it is impossible to have a large terrace, then a gazebo or a summer kitchen can make use of the stay outside in a cozy corner.

Photo source: www.homedit.com

Of course, each owner of such a residence shows his personal reading of convenience and style. Some will bet on exquisite taste with heavy and antique furniture, rich textures and patterns reminiscent of a villa in Tuscany. Others will choose the familiar comfort of a soft sofa, but in light and neutral shades.

Coastal leisurely moments can be transferred to your small villa. And if you are striving to achieve your dream Southern architectural style, but do not want to improvise – do not hesitate to write to us at office@atg-design.com[:]

Contemporary design – a meaningful step towards sustainable existence

International architects and designers are increasingly uniting around concepts for buildings with minimal or zero environmental footprint. And the realization of the almost insurmountable environmental catastrophe provoked many to choose a sustainable existence. This, in turn, provokes professionals to respond to the demand by weaving it in an impressive way into the aesthetics of their architectural works. This year we observe that the topic of environmental problems is becoming a leading motif of more and more art installations and design projects.

Art installation: Oki Naganode, Julia Lohmann; Courtesy of la Triennale di Milano, Photo by Gianluca di Ioia

An example of this is Broken Nature: Design Takes on Human Survival, part of the 22nd edition of the Milan Trianale. As implied by the theme itself – the project emphasizes the power of design to provide solutions to crisis problems for our era, exploring the architecture and design of objects and concepts in all scales and in all forms of matter. Raising this issue in an established forum of this magnitude gives clear signals that it is time for human existence to be transformed.

The Trinale takes as its task through Broken Nature to promote the importance of creative practices in exploring the relationship between people and complex natural systems and does so in an accessible and attractive way – in the form of exhibitions and art installations. A meaningful step towards restoring this original connection is trusting in contemporary design and engineering for the creation of objects, concepts and new systems in order to achieve it successfully.

Passive houses – eco-friendly and economical

Thanks to innovative technologies, it is no longer insane to talk about ecology and construction at the same time. “Passive houses” have positively confirmed that the impact of our cozy home on the environment can be drastically reduced.

What are they in their essence? Buildings that do not need to build in an additional system and cooling or heating devices, but actually regulate the internal temperature themselves , are called passive.

Photo: Gabrielle Morehead

Visually, you wouldn’t recognize a passive house, but its unique design is in its energy efficiency. The fact is that many architects opt for a futuristic exterior, but the basis of the model is good insulation and a cleverly designed system for regulation and air movement. One thing is for sure – by choosing a passive house as your home, you reduce not only the level of carbon emissions, but also the air conditioning bills of the home.

Active Houses – Sustainability to the Next Level

At first glance, it sounds like the absolute opposite of a Passive House, but on the contrary – the construction of an Active House is the next step towards a solution to live completely energy independent. The essence of active houses overlaps with that of passive houses, but with the addition that they produce enough energy to power the entire household.

Climate change is a scientific fact, and if political and world leaders turn their backs on it, then let us not forget that individual decisions are the first step towards conscious collective action. Choosing contemporary design is a chance we give nature and a way to reconnect with it. [:]

How to optimize space in a stylish and compact way?

[:bg]

Tips and ideas for functional home design

City life sometimes requires the choice of a small apartment, especially if it is at the expense of a convenient location. Without the need to transform the sofa into a bedroom every night, you can elegantly transform any of the spaces in your home into a cozy corner that you can use functionally in everyday life.

Design by Phoebe Sayswow, source www.dezeen.com

The large room is transformed into two new rooms

A classic solution is to convert a large room into two smaller ones. But how? First of all, the choice of whether to make this a permanent or flexible solution is important. You should definitely not miss the workpiece by changing the position of the lighting and all electrical outputs, so that they can be used comfortably in both cases. In fact, there are many different approaches to separating spaces – from building a wall to using folding screens or sliding doors.

However, it is not at all necessary to block completely. Convenient and letting the room “breathe” is the separation of the individual corners in it through furniture that comes into use. Casual and at the same time compact, this allows you to form different areas that complement each other.

In one of our latest residential interior projects , we chose a specially designed wardrobe – both functional and practical choice for both rooms that are being formed.

Game of illusion

Color solutions are decisive for the interior of small spaces. That is why it is good for them to emphasize the feeling of spaciousness. A familiar trick is for one of the walls to be a leading accent that creates the illusion of depth in the room. This can easily be achieved either by using an active color, or by adding one of the trends this year – patterns with natural elements.

A mirror is also a clever way to create an optical elongation of space and is often used for small dwellings. We are applying this method in a current project, which we are yet to show you.

Design by ATG-design, project Tenerife

Regardless of the square footage, each place can adapt to the needs and amenities of its occupant. We, in turn, can promise that we will create it with a dose of distinctive style that fits exactly your character, so that in addition to looking good, it will also be functional. [:]

Fuorisalone conquered the entire city. In recent years, it has become an opportunity for the culture of design to be elegantly conveyed to the general public, immersing itself in the many realities and faces of Milan. On the other hand, Salone del Mobile is the most prestigious furniture exhibition, shaping a strong potential for personal meetings between customers and representatives from the retail sector to grow into business relationships.

Focus events of the Salone del Mobile

This year, Salone del Mobile creates two special and very emotional installations that put Leonardo da Vinci in its main focus. Positioned in the heart of Milan, AQUA is an expression of Salone del Mobile’s desire to revive its strong connection with the city. The purpose of the installations is to “immerse” visitors in a memorable cultural and emotional experience. Again through the prism of design, Leonardo’s vision and approach are presented.

Art in the interior. What do stars collect?

Practically successful and wealthy, celebrities at a certain point in their lives begin to pay attention to art. Of course, the busy work schedule does not allow many of them the opportunity to seriously immerse themselves in the world of art, and even more so to create on their own. However, with the help of experts, some celebrities have managed to create rich collections, which we will tell you about in this material.

Studying the collections of the stars, at first glance we can notice their exceptional interest in contemporary art. Probably, this is related to the large art market of the 20th and 21st centuries, in contrast to the art of the 18th-19th and earlier centuries.

Art5

By the way, this is not the only way to explain the search for contemporary art. When a famous person is at the forefront of modern culture, meeting the requirements of the new world, the demand of those who reflect the changes taking place in the world here and now becomes consonant.

Art6

Practically a generation, Jack Nicholson and Barbra Streisand boast solid collections of 20th-century art.

Barbara appreciates the Art Deco period of the 30s of the last century and owns a large collection of furniture belonging to this period.

Art4

Jack Nicholson, for his part, mainly collects paintings. In his collection he has works by artists such as Paul Cézanne, Tamara de Lempicka and Pablo Picasso.

Impressive is the amount of Madonna’s collection. It has collected paintings by Fernand Léger, Pablo Picasso, Damien Hirst and others, and the unit price of a work can be estimated at tens, even hundreds of millions of dollars.

Art2

Another passionate star collector is Leonardo DiCaprio. Leo is mainly interested in works older than 100 years. DiCaprio not only collects art, he is a true patron. He communicates with contemporary artists and through his biases he has been able to assist many in their career development.

Art2

The list of stars who are fans of art is really large. Especially if we expand this list of decorative art objects.

Art lives forever, it existed long before us and will outlive us for many more years. Being involved in it makes a person’s life much more positive to the extent that it is embedded in us. Following the example of the stars, let’s think about the importance of art not only for the interior of our home, but also for its spiritual value. [:]

Let’s knock on wood: the most ancient material in architecture

[:bg]

At all times, creativity has been at the heart of architecture. In the eyes of the architect, the façade is one of the most important elements of a building. It is she who makes the project unique and shows the individuality of the architect.

Recently, facades made of natural materials have become the most popular all over the world, because they are not only beautiful, but also bring us as close as possible to nature.

Wooden facades are very popular, which is based on the following main factors:

  • Wood is a unique material that has important sound insulation and thermal insulation properties;
  • has aesthetic properties – wood has its own unique pattern;
  • wood gives more design options, it is successfully combined with stone, metal, concrete and glass;
  • natural material merges with the natural landscape and looks organic;
  • the ecological cleanliness of wood is one of the main virtues in our relatively toxic times;
  • The existing abundance of different colors and textures of this material allow the fulfillment of the architect’s creative vision.

wooden_panels1

Interesting: Practice shows that a façade made of wood, with the choice of the right material and quality workmanship, often achieves a longer life than plaster or face concrete.

At present, suspended façade panels made of wood are the best solution in terms of creating favorable conditions in the building. The façade panels are installed at a certain distance from the wall, thus improving the thermal efficiency of the building. At the same time, the air gap prevents the appearance of mold on the façade panel. From an aesthetic point of view, façade panels give a stylish contemporary look to any home.

wooden_panels2

At first glance, the implementation of a home with such a façade seems to us an easy task, but in fact it requires a professional attitude and preparation. Unfortunately, an improperly installed and protected façade made of wood can irrevocably lose its original charm and properties. When choosing the exterior of the home, it is necessary to be careful, and the most suitable option is to trust an experienced architect who will pay attention to all aesthetic and functional features.

Definitely, of all types of façade panels, wood panels are not only distinguished by noble aesthetics, but, with the right approach, have excellent performance characteristics of a warm and ventilated façade.

Undoubtedly, professional flair plays a role in the creation of architecture. It allows every detail to be foreseen and to establish a close connection with the temperament of the residents. Therefore, do not hesitate to seek professional support. We are here to assist you in creating your dream home![:]

How to choose a style for the interior: a short guide

[:bg]

Each interior style is formed under the influence of a certain era, mentality, and has its own unique atmosphere. A space that is created in a certain style will be to the liking of some, and for others it will turn out to be uncomfortable, even decided according to the latest fashion trends.

In order not to get lost in the flow of information and to be able to explain to our designer what we want, we bring to your attention a short guide to popular styles in the interior.

Starbucks-kitchen-2

Scandinavian: perfection in the prostate

We start with most people’s favorite Scandinavian interior. The three pillars of the style: light colors, rational use of space and natural materials. The most favorite of the materials — wood. Maximum spaciousness and light, minimum decoration and dark shades.

The minimalist Scandinavian space loves attention to every detail. In it you will not see massive elements and conspicuous décor, but on the other hand, you will encounter color accents, Scandinavian ornaments, live plants and almost necessarily textiles and ceramics.

Main advantages: This style organizes the space well with the help of ergonomic shapes of the furniture and an abundance of light colors , visually expanding the space.

Who is it suitable for: Practical personalities who do not feel comfortable among pompous chandeliers and classic ornaments. Also to people who want their home to be tidy, simple and clean.

Loft: brick and brutal

The first thing that comes to mind when we hear about “loft” — red bricks and a high ceiling. In fact, brick structures in a loft space can be of different colors, and the ceiling does not have to be infinite. The loft interior, which originated in abandoned industrial spaces, today can be well adapted in residential conditions.

If the space does not have “natural” bricks, then they can be replaced with decorative ones. In fact, many other materials are used in such an interior – concrete, metal and rough wood.

Among all modern styles in interior design, the loft gives the greatest scope for creativity. Decorative elements strive for urbanism. In fact , graffiti, LED signage and “street” lighting fixtures are welcome here. With skillful design, all this brutality can be friends with ordinary home décor and works of art.

Main plus: In some cases, we have the opportunity to save on cladding materials, and we may not hide the installations.

Who is it suitable for: It is generally accepted that the style has a masculine character and fits perfectly with the so-called. “bachelor” housing. However, many ladies in love with this style will not agree. It is suitable for creative natures that are inspired by industrial aesthetics.

Classics and neoclassics: of all times

The Scandinavian and loft have long won the sympathy of many Europeans, but the classic style has always had its place in the game.

It is important to know that behind the phrase classic interior there can be many things. We can refer to the Renaissance, antique sculptures, columns, but most often interior classics mean something ordinary: paintings, pompous textiles, beige range, symmetry and massive furniture.

And what is neoclassicism? This is a modern interpretation of the classical style. In fact, neoclassicism lowers the degree of pomposity and monumentality and implies a combination of traditional décor with contemporary. The style implies noble materials and a wealth of textures. There is room for velvet, suede, leather, lacquered wood, mirrors and unobtrusive gilding. The basis of the interior are light shades of cream and brown.

Main advantages: Always up-to-date, time-tested.

Who is it suitable for: Conservative natures, convinced that fashion is temporary and style is eternal.

High-tech: new technologies in the interior

In the 80s of the last century, high-tech in the interior proudly carried its flag of technological progress and was the number one trend.

High-tech in the interior — modern materials, minimalism and functionality. On this interior , chrome, glass and synthetic materials are favorites. And to the classic decorative elements, the hay-tech says “no”. The paintings are in the form of abstract art, and the plants are greenhouses on a space station.

The color scheme is as neutral as possible. A lot of metal and an emphasis on the variety of textures and lighting (mostly LED).

Main plus: In this interior, we do not need to hide the technique, on the contrary — it can completely replace the decoration.

Who is it suitable for: Perfectionists who prefer pragmatism to romance, and also lovers of gadgets and science fiction.

Eco: non-GMO

You probably think that eco style in the interior is the opposite of high-tech. This is true – the eco style does not accept synthetics, but also does not reject technical progress in the interior. Nevertheless, these two styles have a lot in common — a craving for rationality, free space, and simple geometry.

In its pure form – eco style is always associated with natural materials and an abundance of living flora. Among the main materials we can observe: wood, glass, natural stone, paper and bamboo. The eco-space can be decorated with wood, roots, live moss. Knitted products, which have recently successfully ranked in the list of interior trends, will go well.

The main plus: The eco-interior has every chance to become a harmonious, oxygenated space in the middle of a fast-paced, noisy city.

Who it is suitable for: Nature lovers.

Minimalism: zen in the interior

One of the most popular trends in the world of design, attracting with its restraint and functionality. This is not just a laconic setting, this is a whole philosophy: as few unnecessary things in life as possible and as much light and space as possible.

Minimalism welcomes an open layout, an abundance of light colors and smooth surfaces. Minimal details – all storage systems are hidden, decoration in its practical form is absent, this function is taken over by functional objects: lighting fixtures, pillows, equipment.

The color scheme is often built around two or three base colors, in order to refresh the environment, color accents and lighting scenarios are possible.

The main plus: The style allows us to save decorative elements and pay attention to functionality.

Who is it suitable for: Ascetics – looking for Zen in the interior, rationalists – confident that the little is more.

Undoubtedly, professional flair plays an essential role in the creation of the design. It allows every detail in the interior to be foreseen and to establish a close connection with the temperament of the residents. Therefore , do not hesitate to seek professional support. We are here to assist you in creating your dream interior![:]

Wabi-sabi – beauty in imperfections

[:bg]

We have already told you about hygge, Feng Shui interiors, as well as how eco-style and natural motifs penetrate the philosophy of modern interiors. Another style based on the nature theme is Wabi-sabi.

What is Wabi-sabi?

The Wabi-sabi style, or “beauty in imperfections,” is a “cousin” of Japanese minimalism. This style is changing, dynamic and reflects the life path of the home’s occupants.

In fact, this trend in design is the result of Asian interior traditions and influenced to the smallest detail by the lifestyle of Zen Buddhists. The interior trend originates from the east and is based on the principles of ergonomics and environmental friendliness.

The creation of an emotional interior under the influence of the sophisticated Japanese worldview – Wabi-sabi, prompts us to pay attention to every detail in the space. If we try to translate the phrase wabi-sabi, then literally it will mean calmness, simplicity and modesty.

The Japanese call this style – the contemplation of genuine beauty. The beauty with which simple, even aged things are dressed, wonderful as they are. In every single centimeter of them you can feel the wisdom of time. From these items we learn something about the family history of the inhabitants.

Wabi-sabi7

This style gives up symmetry and regular shapes, giving its preference to natural casual curves. His philosophy lies in the refined combination of incompatible concepts, beauty in imperfections and richness in simplicity.

3 main characteristics of Wabi-sabi

The style of Wabi-sabi unconditionally creates visual purity and a very comfortable atmosphere. There are three main characteristics that define its essence, the natural universe: nothing is perfect, nothing is eternal, and nothing is complete. Three points that express the philosophy of life, in its essence.

The interior, at first glance, seems asymmetrical to us with its uneven surfaces and nondescript colors, but this gives it sensuality and draws attention to every detail.

Today, at the peak of its popularity, this style is ideal for people who:

  • They are tired of endless vanity and seek peace;
  • They prefer eternal values;
  • The desire to decorate the interior with items with seasonal fashion is alien to them;
  • They love decoration distinguished by personal meaning;
  • They know how to enjoy what they have.

Wabi-sabi_collage3

The interior furnishing in the Wabi-sabi style is laconic and is not a one-day fashion. We are talking about ancient rooms brought into a modern look (we are not talking about antiques). This can be:

  • Solid wood cabinet;
  • coffee table made of stone with a broken edge;
  • rope swing.

Here it is important that the items have their own history and are filled with pleasant experiences for the owner. Among other things, hand-made objects and plants are welcome. In the design of such an interior, decoration from dry twigs is very often used. At the same time, it is necessary to observe the rules of minimalism. Items should be small and there must be plenty of free space. The lighting is diffused and dim.

The colors in the Wabi-sabi interior

The style is based on the natural color scheme of the “autumn garden” type: gray, beige, milky, brown, dark green, pale yellow.

When combining colors in Wabi-sabi interiors, monochrome light colors are usually used for the walls and dark colors for the furniture. With the help of light shades, the room becomes lighter and more spacious, and the rest of the colors fill it with tranquility and coziness. It is then that the desired harmony is achieved, which is observed in the natural world, untouched by destructive human activity.

Natural wood, stone, ceramics, leather, cotton, wool, linen – preference is given to natural materials.

The ability of the style to adapt is confirmed by the easy combination with modern interior objects and technologies.

Wabi-sabi2

A new perspective in the interior

Wabi-sabi style – beauty, consisting of necessary and functional items and accessories in the interior. The true philosophy of style, which is becoming more popular every day, reflects the need to return to a more intimate sense of space, in which an infinite amount of emotional stimuli intersect.

«… if the object can evoke in us a feeling of serenity, melancholy and spiritual delight, then we can say that it is Wabi-sabi!”
